About

Mission

JustSpeak aims to encourage people to stay connected to their native languages and  explore why language retention matters on personal, cultural, and generational levels. Migration often disrupts the transmission of language across generations, and this break is frequently reinforced by stigma or accent anxiety surrounding the use of one’s heritage language. JustSpeak seeks to challenge these barriers and inspire individuals to actively speak, preserve, and pass on their native tongues.

Founder's Story

Growing up in a multilingual household, language was always around me. Fragments of Hindi and Tamil drifted through my home — conversations between relatives and phone calls to grandparents, familiar sounds I could recognize but not confidently reproduce. When relatives spoke to me, I often responded in English, nodding along, understanding far more than I could say. At the time, this felt normal. Looking back, it feels like a missed opportunity.

In middle school, I began learning Spanish. Despite knowing little at first, I felt comfortable speaking, practicing, and making mistakes. Spanish felt foreign to my identity, which allowed me to learn it more freely. In contrast, with Hindi and Tamil — languages deeply tied to my culture and family — I held myself to a much higher standard. I expected fluency immediately, and when I fell short, I felt embarrassed. Soon, that embarrassment became avoidance.

As I reflected on my own experience, I began to notice the same pattern among my peers. Many of my friends come from linguistically rich backgrounds, yet few actively speak their heritage languages.  Something about that didn’t feel right. Language is not just a way of communication, but it is also a huge part of one’s history, culture, and identity. Yet across generations, they are quietly disappearing.

Migration often accelerates this loss. In the process of assimilating into English-speaking environments, many families — intentionally or unintentionally — prioritize English over their native languages. Over time, heritage languages fade from daily use, spoken only by older generations until they are no longer spoken at all.

This realization led me to create “Just Speak.” Just Speak hopes to raise awareness for language loss, empower individuals to reconnect with their linguistic heritage, and recognize that every attempt to speak a language helps keep it alive.

Language survives and thrives when it is spoken; sometimes, the most important step is simply to just speak.
